Masks among the Ngbaka are associated with initiation rituals and community ceremonies where masked performers embody spiritual or ancestral forces. The mask is carved from a single piece of wood and shaped into a tapered face with a pointed chin. The prominent circular eyes are accentuated with light pigment that contrasts with the darker stained surface of the mask. Simplified triangular and linear features create a strong graphic composition typical of Ngbaka carving traditions, while surface wear and patina reflect age and handling.
