Masks of this type are associated with the Bwami society, the initiation and moral teaching system central to Lega culture. Rather than representing specific spirits, these masks function as visual teachings used during ceremonies to communicate values such as wisdom, discipline, and ethical conduct. The pale kaolin surface is linked to ideas of spiritual purity and the ancestral realm, while the calm, balanced expression reflects the contemplative nature of Bwami instruction.

The mask is carved from a single piece of wood and shaped into a simplified oval face with narrow eyes, a triangular nose, and a pointed chin. A layer of kaolin pigment is applied to the face, contrasting with the darker wood of the surrounding surface. The restrained carving and minimal decoration reflect the symbolic clarity typical of Lega Bwami objects.
