Cultural Meaning

Small masks of this type are associated with the Bwami society, the moral and educational system central to Lega culture. Often referred to as “passport masks,” they were owned by initiated members and used during teachings, rituals, and social instruction. Rather than representing a specific spirit, they function as symbolic objects conveying ideas about wisdom, discipline, and ethical conduct within the Bwami hierarchy.

Craft & Technique

The mask is carved from a single piece of wood and shaped into a compact oval face with simplified features. Areas of light and dark pigment create strong visual contrast, emphasizing the eyes and facial planes. The worn surface and patina reflect age and repeated handling during ceremonial use.
