Among the Lega, masks are integral to the Bwami society, an initiation system through which moral values, wisdom, and social philosophy are transmitted. These masks are not merely decorative but serve as visual teachings used during initiations and ritual gatherings. The restrained facial expression and simplified features reflect ideals of discipline, humility, and introspection that are central to Bwami teachings.

The mask is carved from a single block of wood and shaped into a narrow triangular face with minimal features. The surface is partially coated with kaolin pigment, creating a pale spirit-like face that contrasts with the darker wooden headdress and vertical projections above. The refined carving, smooth contours, and aged patina reflect traditional Lega sculptural techniques and the ritual handling associated with ceremonial use.
