Cultural Meaning

Masks among the Idoma are closely connected to ancestral veneration and ceremonial performances. They appear in community rituals and masquerades where the masked performer embodies spiritual or ancestral forces that guide and protect the community. The stylized facial features and pale surface evoke the presence of the spirit world, while the calm, balanced expression reflects ideals of wisdom, authority, and ancestral continuity.

Craft & Technique

The mask is carved from a single piece of wood and shaped into an elongated face with prominent eyelids, a triangular nose, and a central crest along the forehead. After carving, the surface is coated with light pigment, contrasting with darker carved elements that define the facial features. The worn patina and surface abrasion reflect age, ritual use, and repeated handling over time.
